Industry Insight: Differential Pressure Flow Meters

Differential Pressure Flow Meters rely on Bernoulli’s principle to measure a flow of fluid or gas either by measuring the differential pressure created by placing a construction (eg an orifice plate or a Venturi tube) in the fluid or gas flow and measuring the differences in upstream pressure to that of the downstream pressure.

The resultant pressure difference (or pressure drop) across the constriction is proportional to the square of the flow rate.

Differential pressure flow meters are generally applicable to many flows in most industries, such as mining, mineral processing, pulp and paper, petroleum, chemical, petrochemical, water, and waste-water industries.

Other flow measurement technologies may perform better than differential pressure flow meters in many applications – however, differential pressure mass flow meters are still used extensively due to long-standing user familiarity with the technology.
