The Challenge of Effective Corporate Time Management

Outline: In the past, time management techniques have focused around various daily organizers or diaries that concentrate on goal setting and prioritizing your routines. Although these are valuable techniques, they are useless unless you can control the timing and content of your job.
For example -
Suppose you have a deadline to meet for a project and have planned to spend the whole day working on it - then your boss calls you in for a meeting to discuss the status of another project. What happens to your plan?
Another example -
Suppose one of your subordinates comes to you with an urgent problem that you know you must take care of to avert a disaster. What happens to your plan?
In both cases, someone else is determining what you do and when you do it - no matter what your plan is - and, in the case of the interruption by your subordinate, you may be doing something that isn’t your job to do! However, in neither case could you refuse to co-operate on the grounds that you have planned your activities for the day in your daily organizer or diary and that you must stick to it. That attitude is bad for the organization, bad for you and bad for your career.
